Apple has announced the next version of Mac OS X with a number of interesting features. Link
First up is a new file storage system to take maximum advantage of the speed of modern solid state devices (SSD) along with new file types that reduce the amount of space taken by photographs. A number of the main programs are also getting updated.
Power users will be interested in the built-in support for eGPU, this allows a large high power Graphics processor card to be installed in an external case (the e in eGPU) with a Thunderbolt 3 40gigabytes per second connection and power supply. computer aided design programs or users needing the sheer number crunching ability of a high-end GPU will benefit.
The new OS is currently at a Beta2 level and is slated for an autumn release to the public.
You will need to take a few steps before upgrading, Backup! make a proper bootable backup, use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make an exact copy of your Mac before running the update, you can download for free from the author’s website.
Get your storage device tested, a big system upgrade with a file system upgrade will give your hard drive or SSD a good workout, sadly that is when they tend to fail.
Check the main software you use for its compatibility before upgrading, you can’t go backwards easily, Look at your software suppliers website for support information.
